Dr. Vani Rao, MD  is a Psychiatrist with training and expertise in Neuropsychiatry providing Mental Health Services in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. She attended Rosary Matriculation School and graduated with a medical degree from Madras Medical College, Madras University, Chennai, India.

Dr. Rao completed her residency in psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University and School of Medicine (JHUSOM) in 1999 and served as the Chief Resident during the last year of residency. After completing a one year fellowship in Neuropsychiatry, she joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2000.  As neuropsychiatrist, she has experience in treating emotional and behavioral problems associated with different types of brain injuries including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI),stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease and other types of dementia. She also has experience in evaluating and treating several depression symptoms of  psychiatric disorders such as, bipolar disorder, Manic depression, substance abuse, anxiety attack, post-traumatic stress disorder, OCD symptoms, schizophrenia, Concussion symptoms, Seizure, Neuropsychiatric disorders, and eating disorders.

Dr. Rao is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland.  She is a Medical Director of the Brain Injury Program and Director of Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry Fellowship program, Department of Psychiatry, JHUSOM. Dr.Rao is geographically serving Washington DC area, Maryland and Virginia.
In April 2013 she was inducted into the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence. This honor is given to the physicians who are “committed to teaching excellence and patient care”.  
Her research interest is on psychiatric aspects of Traumatic Brain Injuryand she has published extensively in this field. See below.
Dr. Rao is Board Certified in Psychiatry and in Neuropsychiatry.
Dr. Rao is also deeply interested in mental health issues of South Asians. She has provided several years of free mental health services at Montgomery County. She is the Past President of the Indo American Psychiatric Association (IAPA)  and currently serves as a member of the IAPA Board of Trustees.
